Portraits in Philanthropy

A philanthropist is someone who gives of their time or their energies for a cause bigger than themselves. $1 or $1 million dollars, no matter. The local women featured on this web page share the stories of their own visions of philanthropy and the impact that their giving has had on each of their lives.

“Do what you say you will do,” is Ann’s advice to others. “In business, in your personal life, as a volunteer, keep your word.” It’s not always easy, she adds, “So choose your commitments wisely. Then, work hard, listen carefully and success will follow.”
Face to face. That’s how one of Green Bay’s quiet philanthropists goes about her charitable giving. Through a foundation as well as personal funds, she is a generous, well-known contributor to many of the area’s prominent institutions and programs. There is another side to her giving, though, one that employs a personalized approach, helping young women with troubled backgrounds and immediate needs.
When Carol Bush’s name appears on an invitation to a fund raising event, two things are certain: the event is for a good cause, and it will be fun! Carol’s contagious enthusiasm encourages others in the community and inspires them to participate. It is difficult to say no to a person like Carol, who gives so freely herself.
Betsy Hendrickson's participation in Green Bay community organizations and her friendships with other women who shared her desire to make the community a better place to live reinforced her dedication to causes like education, mental health, and the arts.
“For I was hungry and you fed me.” Remembering Christ’s words in Matthew’s Gospel, the newly married Engrid Meng suggested to her husband Jack that they begin to tithe. Hard work and good fortune enabled the couple to gradually increase their charitable giving in Green Bay and beyond.
“If you agree to join any organization, be sure you are able to be an active member, attending meetings and participating in committee work. If you can’t, don’t accept the position.” That’s the advice Evaleen “Evie” Neufeld would give to young women as they become involved in the community.
“I sleep better at night knowing I’ve made a little dent in other people’s big problems.” That is how Sharon Resch explains her involvement in philanthropy. While the Resch family’s generosity is evident throughout the Green Bay area, funding buildings, parks, and hospital additions, Sharon herself has focused on direct involvement in causes that touch her personally.
